Have you ever asked yourself the question:
Is your country the best place to live and thrive?

Have you ever wondered if the place, town, country, part of the world you live in is the best place to live and thrive?  Just because you happen to be born and raised in a certain place, maybe that place isn´t the best for you?  Few people move from the place they were born unless forced to. For natural reasons!, here you have your family and friends. Friends you have had since childhood, you know the language, feel culturally at home and safe.

But Could it be that there are other places in the world that can offer you a better life, based on your wishes, priorities or dreams?  hmmmm...

Vi are both born in the 60s, and have grown up, perhaps during the best time in human history, with individual freedom, with fantastic material prosperity, with the opportunity to travel to all corners of the world for small money, received free education. We have grown up in a homogeneous society with few ethnic conflicts and low crime rate. We parked the bike unlocked at the bus station, often forgetting to lock the house when we left. With a steady welfare development, most people looked optimistically at the future. Then something happened that began to turn the tide.  With increased wealth and digitization in society, people paradoxically became further away from each other, the physical meeting was largely replaced by meetings in  the digital world, where Facebook became an increasingly important meeting place - the dopamine kicks from real life are replaced with likes on facebook. Covid escalated this development.

The welfare development in the last 30 years, has made us even more firmly in the squirrel´s wheel, and most people have to work even more hours to be able to finance their increased consumption and depth, everything from gadgets, furnishings, to trips abroad, higher mortgages to the bank, etc. Sweden´s debt ratio (loans per capita in relation to income) is one of the highest in Europe and has increased close to 100% in the last 10 years!. The majority of the population is not financially free, but with increased lending they are in the hands of banks and financial institutions.  If you, who grew up in the 60-70s, ask yourself the simple question, are you happier today? Has your quality of life improved?

Wasked us these questions and came to the conclusion that we live in a society that has become poorer in many other areas despite increased welfare. According to our values, our home country Sweden has gone in the wrong direction politically, culturally and socially with reduced freedom for the individual, with politicians who no longer represent we the people but are driven by their own agendas (that all public power in Sweden emanates from the people and the Riksdag is the people´s main representative who it´s so nicely written in the constitution, it´s becoming more and more a cliché)  With an uncontrolled immigration of criminals where the rulers have lost control, increasing ethnic conflicts. Unfortunately the future looks increasingly dark for Sweden but also many other European countries. As self-employed people, we have struggled to survive, but with one of the world´s highest tax pressures and authorities that put obstacles in the way of small business owners, it is difficult to make it work.  "Running a family business in Sweden – is too expensive, complicated and risky" (quote from www.smaforetagarna.se

Considering the development in Sweden, we wanted to investigate the possibility of finding a new homeland where we could find a life with a higher life quality, more freedom on all levels, a country with a positive future.

If so, what country to choose? There is a big difference between going on vacation for a few weeks and to emigrate.... If you are going to change your home country, there are completely different issues that arise, everything from tax rules, living expenses to social networks, etc

To find our "utopia", a place where we get the opportunity to live the best life based on our priorities, we first had to concretize these, what are our most important priorities in life? Fortunately, we were mostly in agreement, which made it easier to find the right place to move to.  The following steps we went through to find our new homeland:

  1. Selection criteria and ranking of these when choosing a new country.

  2. Based on our existing knowledge after traveling, reading and studying, which countries qualify for the list?

  3. Research of these these countries, from politics, nature, culture, ethnography, geography and economy etc

  4. Based on our old and new knowledge rate these countries.

  5. Visit and explore potential new homelands

  6. Make decisions

  7. Prepare and end all comittment in Sweden

  8. Move to the New Country

  9. Establish a life in the new "home country"

There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: The fear of failure.

― Marcus Aurelius, Roman Emperor

Most difficult part was to choose what we considered to be the most important criteria for choosing a new country. It was relatively easy to come up with 8 criteria, but ranking them was not so easy. In the end we agreed on the following criteria in order of rank, we did the exercise in autumn 2016

Our selection criteria in order of priority:
Digital World Map
  1. Nnature & climate:
For 10 years we have lived out in the Stockholm archipelago, and have lived half of the year mainly outdoors on our the island of Bergholmen where we ran our Lodge, (an "out door tented lodge") Every summer we have lived in and with nature and feel how it affected us so positively both physically and mentally, so it was important for us to find a place in the world where we can live a large part of our life outdoors and in interaction with nature, preferably in a pleasant climate where we avoid heating due to cold or the need for AC because it  is too hot.

  2. Social life: How easy is it to integrate into the new society? Is it easy to find and establish a social life with awake, happy, positive people with similar values to us?

  3. Health:Prerequisite for living a healthy life, for example quality of food, access to clean water, clean air, clean nature, opportunity for active outdoor life summer and winter, a place with minimal pollution, simply a healthy place to live for body and soul

  4. Stability in the country:A stable homogeneous society with minimal conflicts, low crime

  5. Freedom. How freely can one live here? How much of your life is affected by the authorities in the country in the form of control, taxes, rules, bureaucracy?

  6. Infrastructure: transport, roads, water, electricity, healthcare, justice, etc

  7. Eeconomy: can we with saved funds, pension etc. be able to buy land, build a house and  have a good life?

  8. Travel to Scandinavia- Price, availability and travel time

Based on previous trips and perceptions of which countries we considered as possible candidates, we agreed to evaluate the following countries: South Africa, USA, New Zealand, Australia, Costa Rica, Italy, Spain & Croatia.

This is how we distributed the score:
We did practice long before Covid, if we did the points distribution today, the USA, New Zealand would have gone off the list due to their totalitarian handling of Covid and Costa Rica would have received even higher points)

Costa Rica was a clear winner with maximum points on the three most important selection criteria  Nature/Climate, Social life and Health.

When we started our Ö project in 2010, the time horizon was 10 years, after which the plan was to do something completely different. We have been faithful to that timetable, and we can say that the next chapter in our lives will be something completely different.....Costa Rica here we come!
